My Interpretation of "E cube" (English Translation)

(This is My interpretation of "E Cube" in Chinese -- The 3 Dimension of "Xin" (心))

1. Enriching Minds:

  • The dimension of height. (高度的慧心)
  • It is the "journey of seeing bigger picture".
  • Idea illustration: Sky is not the limit. We should go beyond it and enter into the outer space. When we think that we see the 'biger picture', there is always a 'bigger picture' out there.
  • Application in real life: We should go beyond language to see bigger picture of human culture so as to teach language well. We should go beyond Commonwealth Sec to see a bigger picture of world class school so as to bring the school to a new height. We should go beyond races to see a bigger picture of human being so as to attain racial harmony. We should go beyond religions to see the bigger picture of universal principles of human life so as to attain inter-religious harmony. And so on.

2 Engaging Hearts:

  • The dimension of depth. (深度的爱心)
  • It is the 'home for all students and teachers.'
  • Idea illustration: People call schools/workplaces as their 'second home'. It is not true. It is either you have a home or you have none. There is no such thing as 'first home' and 'second home'. The famous Chinese saying of 'within four seas, all mans are brothers' enlightens us the meaning of 'real home'. If we have sincerity towards people and build up quality relation with them, whole world is our home. If we fail to show sincerity towards our family members and build up quality relation with them, there is no home for us in this world.
  • Application: Teachers should show (from the heart) care and concern for their students so that to lead by example for them to show (from the heart) their care and concern for their peers, teachers and parents. Care and concern not only the academic results, but also the holistic development of the person.
  • To add, 'engage' should go deeper and deeper. There is no limit. I think of the metaphor of 'deep ocean' (as compared to the metaphor of 'outer space' of the mind). We should engage the ever lasting source of power of life, i.e. love.
  • This is the aspect of EQ.

3 Excellent Environment:

  • The dimensions of length, width and height. It is a 3-D space. (广阔的空间)
  • It is 'the best time and spcae in our lives'.
  • Idea illustration: The integration of the mind and the heart, or the source of them, is the 'Will Power'. With our free will, we will discover that: Every single moment of time in Commonwealth is the best mement in our lives! Every corner of Commonwealth is the best space in the entire world! This is actually the power of 'yin' (calmness of the mind) and 'yang' (warmth of the heart) as mentioned in the I-Ching, the Chinese classics.
  • Application: (to be developed)
  • This is the aspect of AQ. ---- The Excellent Environment will not come by istself. It will only come if we have the courage to face all the difficulties and adversities and work in team or teams to overcome them.

三心:慧心、关心、开心

1 EnrichingMinds:慧心;老师用自己的慧心来启发学生的慧心。
2 EngagingHearts:关心;老师关心学生,并引导学生互相关心,关心学业,也关心人格的全面发展。
3 Excellent Environment:开心;开心的工作环境,包括物质环境、人事环境和心理环境。

给机会、骗不过、会忍耐

这个标题内容,出自今天一个犯错的中五学生之口。
他在课堂对我大声吼叫,出言不逊之后,我把他交给训育主任处理。
训育主任向他说了一番话后,带着他来到我的座位旁,在他面前告诉我说:他必须向我说明他不必被鞭打的理由,否则依照校规,他对老师无礼辱骂,是要被鞭打的。
于是,我带着他到教员工作室外边的桌椅坐下来。
他先向我道歉。
我问他:我在你中三时教过你,我已经很了解你了,可能比你自己还要了解你,因为我学过心理学。(但是,你了解我吗?)你说,我是一个怎样的老师?
我要他说出三个特点。
他很聪明,在这种情景下,把握机会说:给机会。
我说:很好,答对了一个。但是,最重要的不是老师给你机会,而是你要给自己机会。那,第二个(特点)呢?
他也懂得挑老师爱听的说:骗不过。
我说:对,你骗不过老师。但是,老师更希望你不要被自己骗了。要知道,我们的大脑是最胆小的,一旦我们发怒,它就会赶快为我们寻找一百零一个生气的理由。那,第三个(特点)呢?
他想了好一阵子,才说:会忍耐。
我说:是的,我们一定要学会忍耐,忍耐住怒气,大脑才能想到好方法来解决问题。好,现在你去向训育主任说,我和你说了什么。
他再次向我道歉,然后下楼找训育主任去。
